Cultural identity
It could be said that Australia's identity as a vibrant multicultural society has much to do with marketing a new country to the world. As a new country, Australia suffers from the tensions of an emerging identity that tries to integrate multiple cultural perspectives and indigenous cultural rights into an essentially white Anglo-Saxon cultural paradigm. Community-based arts and cultural programs are a valuable way of exploring identity and developing a language of exchange that can be used to foster diversity and harmony within and between cultures.

Australia's many indigenous peoples have suffered gross injustices and are engaged in continuing processes of land rights reform, cultural heritage protection and policy development that are intrinsically bound with issues of reconciliation and social justice issues. The Aboriginal cultural heritage is diverse and deep and rich with relationships to land, and has many lessons to teach, but is subject to ‘national' appropriations and cultural misconduct. Aboriginal culture is also undergoing an immense identity shift, as urban living and new cultural influences shape future generations of Aboriginal men and women in Australia. Ccd models of working together with Aboriginal communities may help to develop ways of preserving the traditional ways, and finding new ways of living healthy and harmonious lives. Australia is rich with a complex migrant history. Interaction between cultures is the place of confrontation and change, and ccd programs and projects can provide positive frameworks in which to explore the dynamics of exchange. Cross-cultural exchange might include looking at values and shared meanings, finding common ground, examining changing identity and finding new ways to share and develop. Cross-cultural work is about using tensions to inform positive change, and pro-actively working towards change by setting up spaces for cultural dialogue exchange. Australian through international cultural exchange programs are largely funded through Australia's federal arts funding body, the Australia Council for the Arts, and may take the form of cultural exchange, a residency, as audience development, research and training, and promotion. Australian artsworkers that take advantage of overseas placement and development opportunities are in a position to bring back their knowledge to Australian communities and extend the practice of ccd in this country. In turn, Australia's ccd practice is widely regarded in other countries as being innovative. Interesting dialogue emerges where approaches may be clearly aligned but terminologies differ: ccd is a term not widely used internationally, but an understanding of the underlying principles are common to all countries. Of particular interest is the work of indigenous peoples overseas; their models and processes may have much to teach us as we grapple with issues of reconciliation and justice.
