Introduction

The papers published here were presented at DARE, the 1997 National Community Cultural Development Conference. DARE brought together more than 300 people from across Australia. Community cultural development workers, artists and representatives of the many fields in which community cultural development practice is taking place gathered to discuss their work, to make new connections and to consider key issues.

Presentations at DARE varied in style from speeches, forums, panel sessions, debates and papers to performances. In addition to the papers included here DARE delegates enjoyed live performances of new works, visual arts exhibitions, bus trips, film nights, award presentations, launches and workshop sessions.

DARE was opened with an official welcome by Mullinjarlie, a member of the Brisbane Council of Elders and a performance by the Jagera Jarjum Dancers. It closed with an excerpt from a traditional Indonesian Opera performed by the Samerang Dancers and Brisbane based performers with whom they had undertaken recent residency.

Exhibitions included Tracking the Blue Sheep an exhibition curated by Brisbane's Access Arts, and Seeing Black a photographic exhibition of work by young people in Alice Springs. Traditional and contemporary tapa's by the Northern Beaches Tongan Women's group provided a backdrop to the main stage.

Over the three days of the conference visual artist Techy Masero constructed, with the assistance of conference delegates, an installation in King George Square. At the close of the conference the sculptural work was donated to Brisbane City Council for permanent placement in a city park. Many delegates also attended workshops with Lylie Fisher on New Technologies and CCD which included an introduction to the new ORCA site (On Line Resources for Community-based Arts).

The papers included here have been edited from transcripts of presentations, we thank all the presenters for their contribution and for sharing their thoughts and knowledge.

I hope that these papers provide a valuable tool to those who attended DARE and that they are also useful fo those who were unable to join us in November.
