Hello from Vanuatu. I arrived here about 10 days ago. I am doing my placement with Wan Smol Bag theatre company in Port Vila, Vanuatu. The company is huge, it has about five small companys of actors, a youth company (all paid), they produce films (A Piece of Land being shown at the Brisbane International Film Festival - check out the BIF site for times and dates), radio dramas, radio documentaries, provide teacher training and development theatre throughout the Pacific Region. My specific role is to direct the next show for the youth company, but who knows what else I amy get involved in as I get more familiar with the company and the language. All rehearsals and meetings are conducted in Bislama - pidgeon english. Everyone says it is really easy, but is certainly isn't when people speak fast and with regional dialects!! If you think Vanuatu is a sunny paradise - think again! It has rained ever since I arrived, I am getting very used to muddy and damp footwear. I'm sure the sun will come out at some stage though. Very soon I will post some excerpts of my journal / diary for anyone who is interested. I'm not sure what kind of information will be interesting, so please tell me if you want to hear about specific things. Till next time, Alle olgeta - Melinda Collie-Holmes
