  Hearsay Project brief

Hearsay is a project that brings together two visual artists from Eyre Peninsula, Siv Grava and John Turpie, with refugees and asylum seekers of the Baxter Detention Centre (Port Augusta) over a period of six months to create a visual art installation which will be exhibited during Adelaide Fringe 2004 for the entire event (February 20 - March 14 2004).

As the title indicates - Hearsay (rumour and gossip) - hopes to dispel myths and misconceptions about refugee and asylum seekers. The Fringe aims to help give a voice to refugees and asylum seekers, so they may have a vital presence in the Adelaide Fringe and through their art and stories reach an extraordinary amount of people.

  Meet the Artists

Both the artists that have been chosen for this project, John Turpie and Siv Grava, have had extensive experience in working with communities on a variety of projects in regional centres in both South Australia and Victoria. They have also worked on several projects together.

  John Turpie

Since 1988, John has run workshops for several communities in the Pitjantjara lands in ceramics, print making, silk painting, paper casting and mosaics. He has worked with the communities of Kimba, Wallaroo, Cleve, Arno Bay, Fregon, Meningie, Tennant Creek, Streaky Bay and many others on developing and creating murals. He curated and coordinated several Visual Arts Projects including, Sculpture on the Cliffs at Elliston; Meeting of the Winds Festival, Elliston. He has been a teacher and lecturer at the Council of Adult Education, Melbourne and has initiated numerous visual arts projects with indiginous and non-indigious communities in South Australia and the Northern Territory as well as projects in prisons.

  Siv Grava

Siv Grava has worked on many projects with John Turpie including community projects at Tumby Bay, Arno Bay, Fregon, Meningie, Tenant Creek and Streaky Bay. Her Public Art Commissions include the Warumungu Interpretive Centre, Tenant Creek. She curated and coordintaed the Sculpture on the Cliffs exhibition at Elliston. Siv was the SA representative on the Community Cultural Development Board for the Australia Council in 1995.

Project Coordinator - Rebecca Pearce Photo Viv Mehes

Rebecca Pearce, is Special Events coordinator for the Adelaide Fringe 2004, and will be project coordinator for Hearsay. She has been working with the Adelaide Fringe since 2000 in a variety of roles including Volunteer coordinator, Opening Parade Coordinator(2002), and Operations Coordinator. Rebecca has been involved in producing both small and large scale events. She is currently studying graduate diploma in Arts management (University of South Australia) and has just completed the Multicultural Arts Professional Development course at RMIT, Melbourne.
