Initial planning for this project commenced in early 2003 with staff from the Cleveland Education and Training Centre Art Unit and Project Services. The project was planned for first semester 2004. The budget included an artist in residence to facilitate the three dimensional component of the project. The need to finalise the budget in 2003 made it difficult to include the students in the concept development. The mobility of these students makes meaningful long tem planning impossible. There was a flexible plan put in place to create sculptures of sportsmen that would be installed in the ceiling of the new multipurpose hall. A frame would support this with painted canvases attached. The walkways to the multipurpose hall would have ceramic tiles decorated by the students and inserted at regular intervals. The students became involved early in semester 1, 2004. The tiling project has been progressing during the year. The sculpture project commenced in May this year with plans to create three sculptures of sporting figures from plaster bandages. Local artist Candace Miles worked with a group of 8 students casting and moulding body parts to create life like sculptures. The boys learned many new skills as well as developing a great sense of pride in their achievements. This was evident when they showed the many visitors to the art room their work an explained the processes. The canvases were painted I a variety of images that portrayed the diversity of cultures represented in the centre as well as preferences for a variety of sporting activities and teams. The sculptures will be installed in the multipurpose hall in the next few weeks. This delay allowed two of the sculptures to be included in the NAIDOC display, which was viewed by many visitors. It is intended hat these artworks will be replaced every 3-4 years. This will encourage ongoing three dimensional studies projects as well as giving current students the opportunity to update sporting preferences.
