Project Description

Aerograffix is a Brisbane based aerosol art crew established in 2000 by local artists and the Redland Shire Council. The group has members with variuos skill levels and experience in the arts.

The group started as a collective of artists who through Hip Hop culture, teach arts skills and create a more positive attitude towards young people and acknowlegement from the wider community. Projects developed by Aerograffix aim to redirect youths who may be involved in vandalistic and antisocial behavior.

Vision Statement:

Aerograffix supports the philosophy that it is the consciouness of the person holding the spraycan that detirmines whether the spraycan is good or bad.

Project Aimed to:
- Build on from the demonstrated interest and artistic skill of the young people from Wynnum Manly (QLD) who were involved in the previous pilot project by Australian Network for Arts and Health entitled Wynnum Youth at Risk Art Project, and the community agencies who support them such as BABI (Bayside Adolescent Boarding Inc)
and
• Continue to support Hip Hop and street based writing forms of communication in the area.

It is important that these young artists and their preferred cultural activities be supported and acknowledged by other members of the community.

The community agencies recognize there is little on-going arts and cultural activity for young people in the Wynnum-Manly region, particularly for those from unstable living arrangements due to issues with mental health and homelessness.

This project, developed for young people a way of working with a number of community and government organizations - each of whom have a role to play in making arts and cultural based activities available to young people in Wynnum Manly.

Project Outcomes:
- Aerosol workshops at PCYC Lota
- DJ and Brekdancing event at Wynnum Bowls Club in partnership with BABI.
