Project Description
|
 |
The Blackfellas Whitefellas Wetlands project engaged a range of artists, historians and environmentalists to explore the Indigenous and European history of the Boondall Wetlands and its significance as a habitat, both locally and internationally. A team of historians, poets, photographers, environmentalists and designers collaborated to present a picture of the cultural history and natural beauty of the area. Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists worked alongside each other over a six month period. The resulting website presents their work in an integrated design context where the work of poets and photographers often sits on the same page as that of the environmentalists complementing each others vision and understanding of the past and the present. The project documents the transformation of the area from its image as a mosquito infested swamp, a dumping ground for rusted car bodies and the cast-offs of the surrounding urban community to a wetlands recognized as an international RAMSAR site. The website also tracks subsequent Visual arts projects which have been extensions of this initial work. The project was an initiative of the Brisbane City Council and supported by the Australian Foundation for Culture and the Humanities.
