Decision-making in the arts sector is sometimes seen as problematical as many of the 'primary' decisions are made away from the 'primary' creative practice. The criteria for decision-making may be perceived as based on organisational or financial need, rather than creative output or social need. It is my view that the perceptions need testing. To do this I needed a way of understanding how decisions are reached in a variety of different contexts within the arts and cultural sector. Most would concede that decision-making is not a precise science. My quest thus became finding an appropriate research methodology for these explorations. Action research emerged as a useful framework for adding understanding within dynamic situations. This thesis reports on the usefulness of participatory action research as a tool for the exploration of decision-making processes by a range of people working within the arts and cultural sectors.

The Drama of Self-Image Through Image Theatre
First presented August 1998
at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education
San Antonio, TX
By Cathy Plourde
ADD VERB Productions
To describe his philosophy of theatre practice, Augusto Boal (Games for Actors and Non-Actors, 1992) uses the term maieutics, the Socratic process of assisting a person to bring into clear consciousness conceptions previously latent in the mind, and the concept of Image Theatre. Image Theatre's maieutic properties provide flexible tools for creating exciting, high-quality and socially significant theatre. I have explored Image Theatre techniques in a workshop for girls and documenting their experiences. This project is appropriately related to the work I have been doing in Maine for the last several years, writing and directing plays for girls, as well as working with girls to script or create their own pieces. With this paper I hope to reinforce the need to provide girls with such opportunities as well as testify to the efficacy and great potential implications of Image Theatre.

Engaging Art: The Artful Dodgers Studio, A Theoretical Model of Practice.
The authors, Martin Thiele and Sally Marsden, have used the community cultural development methodology employed within The Artful Dodgers Studio, a Gateway program of Jesuit Social Services, as a reference point to investigate a range of professional practice considerations for artists working in community cultural development.
In addition, this study provides:
Three case studies - identifying how the artistic and social trajectories have been developed to assist participants to shift from high levels of social exclusion to high levels of social inclusion;
Considers ethical practices for community cultural development artists, specifically in relation to high risk groups such:
1. The handling of disclosure.
2. Dignified representation.
3. The community's legacy after project completion.
4. Health and safety.
5. Collective ownership of material.
6. Explores data collection methods that are appropriate to a cultural approach and compliment rather than inhibit artistic practice.
