Opening speaker: Alex Reid Director of Strategy, Policy and Initiatives, Arts SA in other words… creates unexpected relationships between materials, techniques and cultures.
Produced byCraftsouth: Centre for Contemporary Craft and Design and presented in partnership with the Adelaide Festival Centre, in other words… s an exchange project linking South Australian contemporary craft, design and visual art with traditional craft practices existing in our culturally diverse communities. in other words… presents newly developed work by eleven South Australian artists alongside the work of fourteen individuals who practice crafts specific to their ethnic heritage. Talented glass artist Deb Jones has undertaken an exploratory working partnership with Japanese gardener Fumio Uedato create one large scale work, which embodies a unique cultural and artistic fusion. Textile artist Sandy Elverd has collaborated with Ngarrindjeri - Kaurna weaver Auntie Veronica Brodie to produce a joint work, informed by the sharing of their individual skills and techniques in a two-way cultural exchange. Visual artist Lee Salomone is working in partnership with Tongan community member Heuifanga Carlson and members of the Mahutafea Women's Group to create new work inspired by Tongan traditions, designs and motifs. Through partnerships such as these, contemporary artists explore culturally specific ideas, creative processes and traditions that differ from those they might encounter in their usual professional practice. in other words… is not only an exhibition but an on-going influence informing new directions in arts practice and a deeper understanding between participants. Unexpected relationships between materials and techniques are created, such as forged metalwork with Turkish needlework or jewellery with traditional Middle Eastern instrument making. Based on interpersonal connection and dialogue, in other words… entertains the possibility of transcending predictable methods of art making; coming full circle to revisit and reinvigorate the contemporary through tradition. The exhibition at Adelaide Festival Centre's ArtSpace showcases the results of these creative synergies. Importantly, this project involves a deeply layered approach, understood as a kind of palimpsest, under which substratum layers of riches await further exploration.
